The campaign includes the construction of water points, handwashing stations, and toilet facilities, as well as hygiene education programs for students and teachers.
In Uganda, access to clean and safe water is still a major challenge; the high population growth in the Country has stressed the water and sanitation services that exist. 51% of Ugandans lack access to safe water and 81% do not have access to improved sanitation facilities. Due to such disparities in water access in Uganda, poor and vulnerable people pay as much as 22& of their hard-earned income to access water from water vendors or risk drinking from ponds and other unclear water sources share together with animals. Spending such a high percentage of earnings on water reduces overall household income, limiting opportunities to build savings and break the cycle of poverty.
In Uganda today and around the world, millions are navigating the COVID-19 pandemic with the added challenge of living without access to clean and safe water. Now more than ever access to clean and safe water is critical to the health of families in Uganda and paramount to their socio-economic growth and development.
With such a huge challenge regarding access to clean and safe water in the Greater Masaka region; PAPIRUDEI and her development partners have focused on enabling communities to gain meaningful access to clean and safe water while at the same time improve the hygiene and sanitation practices and outcomes.
Some of PAPIRUDEI’s past activities include:
- Installation of rain water harvesting systems/water tanks to prisons, primary and secondary schools, health centres.
- Supply of water filters in schools.
- Protection of spring wells, hand-dug wells and deep boreholes in communities.
- Sensitization of communities in good hygiene behaviours.
- Intensive promotion of the use of sanitation facilities among households.
- Distribution of tippy-taps.
- Organised Health Camps
