Padre Pio Hospital, Butozi Is Coming To The Greater Masaka

In Uganda, the health sector is one of the most under-facilitated with an allocation of 8.0% of the national budget, despite its centrality to life and socio-economic development. The proposed budget for the health sector for the financial year is Shs2.2 trillion, which translates into a decrease of Shs1.1 trillion for the financial year 2021/2022.

Whereas there have been some efforts to extend health services to communities through setting up what are known as health centres, many of these remain ill equipped, without qualified and available health workers, and then lacking in medical supplies. As such, many people rely on private health care services.

PAPIRUDEI is embarking on a high-impact project tailored to Padre Pio Hospital, Butozi located in the remote area of Kyotera District (Lusaka Village). Majority of the community members have to walk for more than 45 kms from the nearest health centre to receive medication or else resort to the traditional healers for intervention. This has seen a growing number of pregnant mothers and children die from easily treated diseases. The nearest Hospital is in Kalisizo about 64 kms away and it being a government run hospital, the services provided for are not of standard and the staff are always either absent or redundant due to the poor facilitation. The neighbouring health facilities are also not well equipped to care for the local community.
